It appears that someone in our neighborhood is using rat poison, based on recent reports of dead rats. In the Chicken Point area, we are fortunate to have at least one breeding pair of owls, which are our most effective natural form of rodent control. However, when owls or other wildlife eat poisoned rats, they succumb to the poison as well.
If you need to manage rodents on your property, please consider safer alternatives. Hardware stores like Home Depot sell electronic rat traps that are highly effective, humane, and present no risk to local wildlife or the environment.
Owls provide incredible natural pest control for our community:
- Individual Impact: A single adult owl consumes 1 to 4 rodents per day (7 to 28 per week, or up to 100+ per month).
- Family Impact: During breeding season, a pair of barn owls and their chicks can consume 3 to 25 rodents per night, totaling 1,000 to 3,000+ rodents per year.
