Approximately 2 weeks ago, San Rafael Sanitary reported a sewage spill into the Beach Drive marsh. Approximately 900 gallons of sewage was estimated to have entered the Beach Drive marsh. The spill was caused by a break in an older (original 1973 era) cast iron pipe connecting the pump housing with the main sewer line. A contractor was brought in to complete a repair. The Beach Drive marsh has been tested daily and yesterday, the Health Dept determined it was safe to remove the ‘caution’ signs.
Another leak occurred subsequently yesterday but without seepage into the marsh. The Sanitation district has decided to replace the old pipe completely themselves. Work started today and should be complete by tomorrow.
